Walter B. Gyger has graduated in Public Management at the University of St. Gallen/Switzerland. He has written his doctor thesis on European Integration and is Honorary Doctor of Philosophy of the University of the Russia’s Academy of Education.

He joined the Diplomatic Service of Switzerland in 1974 and served in Iran, Geneva (Mission to UN and EFTA), Paris (OECD), and Bonn. 1987 he was appointed Deputy Director General for international Organisations in Bern. 1991 the Swiss Government appointed him Ambassador to Senegal, Mali, Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau and the Gambia. From 1995 to 1999 he was Head of the Swiss Mission in Geneva. Afterwads he represented Switzerland in India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan. 2004 he was appointed Swiss Ambassador to Turkey and Azerbaijan. His last diplomatic assignment was in Moscow as Ambassador of Switzerland to the Russian Federation. He has participated in various mediation efforts in Afrika, Asia and Turkey.

Walter B. Gyger is a Rotarian since 1994. He was member of Rotary Clubs in Senegal, India, Turkey and Switzerland. Since July 2015 he is the principal Representative of Rotary International to the UN Office and other international Organisations in Geneva.
